You’ve said a lot of good things that I think are worth everyone considering, but I also want to challenge some of it as well. As you already know, we’ve got some similar interests and a nerd bent in common. I devoured The Chalice and the Blade and Eisler’s follow up book, Sacred Pleasure. I quote from them both often. I use a lot of links and quotes in my stories because it saves me time later going back to support my work when a certain kind of guy shows up and tells me I don’t know what I’m talking about (something that has happened often).
A couple of times I’ve asked James to read a draft and he’s mentioned that it’s a bit dense, and perhaps not a great fit for the average Medium reader. But, what I’ve come to find is that this is my niche and there are plenty of readers for it. I use words like outre and vanguard because that’s the way I like to write. I do often add in personal stories or other more conversational stuff to tie the research together, but apparently, I’ve found my voice. Not every story like this does this well (1K claps), but I’ve had several that have come pretty close.
So in other words, I’m encouraging you to keep playing with accessibility but to also not sacrifice who you really are to do it. I think you just haven’t found your sweet spot yet, but when you do, it will be terrific!
